We all know working with electricity can be dangerous, even with a simple measurement task, which is why I always choose my tools from a well-known brand.
Made by Klein Tools, a brand that has been around for over 160 years, Klein Clamp Meter CL800 made a pretty good impression on me.
The Klein CL800 600-amperes 1,000-volt ac/dc auto-ranging has a pretty “rugged” and compact design. Like any other clamp meter, it has a clamp (for current-sensing) covered by rubber at the top, an LCD screen, and a selection knob.
As I said above, the Klein CL800 has a compact design that fits perfectly in your hand.
This means you can operate the meter using only one hand: use your thumb to turn the selection knob or hit the buttons, and your index finger to pull open the clamp.
The large LCD screen is equipped with a backlight so you can read the test results with ease, even when there is no light around.
I find this a small, but a clever feature, as sometimes I have to cut the power to get my job done.
It requires 2 AAA batteries to operate, and they are already included in the package.
Here is such a versatile tool, yet it’s so easy to use that even a novice can operate with no troubles.
- Advanced safety feature
You know what people always say: “Safety comes first!”. Most of the products on the market can only meet the safety rating of CAT II.
The Klein tools cl800 ac/dc auto-ranging 600 amp, on the other hand, passed the safety rating of 3 different tests:
- The CAT III: it can measure up to 1000V on category 3 circuits
- The CAT IV: aka on category 4, it measures up to 600V.
- Class 2, Double insulation: you will have more protection from electrocution thanks to the two layers of insulation.
With such an advanced safety feature, it’s understandable that its price is higher than other meters.
- Thermocouple probe
Another plus point of the Klein Tools CL800 Digital Clamp Meter is the Thermocouple probe, which enables the tool to measure temperature: just connect it to the device that needs measuring, wait for a few seconds, and it will show you the result.
What’s more, the LCD screen can display both Fahrenheit and Celsius, a great feature since most meters made in the US only have the Fahrenheit option.
The Automatically Ranging True Mean squared (TRMS) technology helps increase the accuracy of the Klein Tools CL800.
Combined with the LoZ (low impedance) function, I could accurately test results without worrying about a ghost or stray voltages.
Obviously, as a clamp meter, this tool is made to measure AC/DC voltage.
Aside from that, this meter is able to measure continuity, capacitance, resistance, frequency, and test diodes.
The Klein CL800 weighs only 0.78 pounds. It’s lightweight enough for me to carry around without any difficulty. Moreover, the included carrying case is very sturdy so I don’t have to worry about the tool being damaged or broken.
- Some other unique features
In addition to the selection knob, there is a button to monitor circuits’ values and another button that allows you to switch the range between auto and manual.
Plus, the Klein CL800 will make a beeping sound when it senses voltage from switches, cords, etc. This feature saves me 5 to 10 minutes of finding electric current, as I don’t have to test those devices directly.
What we don’t really like about it
Sadly, no product is perfect, and neither is Klein tools CL800.
After reading the product’s manual and using the Klein tools CL800 for three months, I found out that the voltage results might jump from time to time, usually when I accidentally tapped it.
Also, taking more than one measurement in a row can frustrate you (as it did with me) because then it takes longer for this meter to show you the readings.
Lastly, I read some reviews that complained about the inaccuracy of the temperature measurement (about 7 degrees Fahrenheit).
Are Klein meters any good?
Established in 1857 in the US, after more than 160 years, Klein Tools has designed pretty much any type of tools, from small things like nuts and screwdrivers to bigger tools like mining and heavy industry machines.
For meters, Klein has more than 20 different models of various functions and prices, so I’m pretty sure you can find one that fits your needs among them.
What I like about Klein meters is that they are always equipped with the newest technologies (the True Root Mean Square (TRMS), for example) and with safety features (all meters meet CAT III safety rating or more).
Klein meters are pretty lightweight, yet somehow very sturdy. Some can withstand being dropped from 6.6 Foot (2 m) high. Thanks to this feature, I don’t have to get a new meter every time I drop one by accident, and a lot of money is saved.
So, if you are wondering if Klein meters are any good, my answer would be a big “Yes”.
How accurate is a clamp meter?
Originally, it was built to measure electric current only.
Over the past few decades, they have been upgraded, and nowadays, some models can also measure voltage, continuity, resistance, etc. of electric devices.
The tool is pretty accurate but not as accurate as a multimeter.
However, using a multimeter means you have to break the circuit and let the current flow directly through the meter. You don’t have to go through that trouble with a clamp meter.
In short, if you want high accuracy and resolution, I recommend getting a multimeter.
If you want a convenient tool for small tasks around your house, then opt for a clamp meter instead.
What is the best clamp meter for HVAC?
